POSTER COMMISSION

2022, Freelance
Delivered: Show poster

In the summer of 2022, I was commissioned by a local music group known as Death Sounds to produce a poster for an EP release show they were hosting with four other local bands – providing me with a great opportunity to combine my two passions of music and graphic design.

When adding the text to the poster, I focused on making the necessary what/when/where information as visually clear as possible, leaving only the band names for stylization.

In Illustrator, a series of warp filters were applied to the band names to create the effect that they were almost sitting on the surface of the water of the source photo, and had been stretched and bent by its movement. This was a lot of fun to play around with and I was very pleased with the end result.

At the time, I had just begun my own personal stockpile of photos and other graphics that I found interesting while browsing randomly through the WikiMedia Commons’ database of Creative Commons images.

One of the photos I found and had saved (seen above) caught my eye as a good candidate for the background of the poster, as it had a nice amount of texture, as well as a relatively clear space for me to add text and it be sufficiently readable.

After some playing around, I found a smaller section of the photo after a 90˚ clockwise rotation to be an ideal starting point for the poster, and after some further experimentation with the color balance, filters, and blending modes in Photoshop, I landed on what I found to be an engaging contrast of color.
